General Info

NuvaRing® is a combined hormonal contraceptive device for females. The device is a flexible plastic ring which is placed into the vagina. After inserting into vagina NuvaRing® releases a daily dose of the hormones progestin and estrogen into the body, which prevents the risk to get pregnant.

NuvaRing®
Active Ingredient

Etonogestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol.

Description

NuvaRing® is manufactured by Organon (also known as MSD).

NuvaRing® contains two types of female hormones, estrogen (Ethinyl Estradiol) and progestin (Etonogestrel), which work together to prevent pregnancy by inhibiting the secretion of gonadotropins (follicle stimulating hormone, FSH and luteinizing hormone, LH).

Etonogestrel is a synthetic form of female hormone progesterone – third-generation progestin. It works by inhibiting the release of eggs (ovulation), causes changes in your cervical mucus and uterine lining, preventing sperm from reaching the uterus and a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus.

Ethinyl Estradiol is a synthetic estrogen. Like naturally occurring in the body hormone estrogen, Ethinyl Estradiol regulates and maintains menstrual cycle. It stops ovaries from releasing an egg.

Once NuvaRing® is placed in your vagina, it releases a continuous low dose of hormones that provides strong contraception.

Use NuvaRing® as directed and experience about 98% of its effectiveness, just like the combined contraception pill. With vaginal ring you don't have to think about taking it every day and to stick to the strict schedule.

Dosage

You should start using the ring by inserting it between Day 1 and Day 5 of your menstrual cycle. If you insert the vaginal ring later than five days after the start of your period, protection will begin after seven days. Use an additional method of birth control contraception, like male condom, female condom or spermicide for the next 7 days.

How to use NuvaRing®:

1. Wash and dry your hands before inserting NuvaRing®.

2. Open the foil pouch at either notch near the top (do not discard the foil pouch so you can place your used NuvaRing® in it after 3 weeks).

3. Hold NuvaRing® between your thumb and index finger and press the sides of the ring together.

4. Insert the NuvaRing® into your vagina and gently push it further up using index finger.

5. NuvaRing® may be in different positions in your vagina, may move around slightly within your vagina. This is normal. Most women do not feel it when it is in place.

General Advice for Using NuvaRing®:

If you feel uncomfortable with NuvaRing®, you may not have placed the ring into your vagina far enough. Try to push NuvaRing® gently as far as you can into your vagina.

If you have accidentally inserted NuvaRing® into the bladder, call your health care provider right away.

If the ring slips out of your vagina, you can gently wash it under cold water (not hot water!) and re-insert the ring in your vagina as soon as possible. It is obligatory to do this within 3 hours. If you wait longer than 3 hours or forget to put the ring back in your vagina, there is a likelihood to become pregnant. Place the ring back in your vagina and use an additional method of birth control contraception, like male condom, female condom or spermicide for 7 days.

Removing NuvaRing®:

1. Remove the ring 3 weeks after insertion on the same day of the week and at the same time of day.

2. Wash and dry your hands before removing NuvaRing®.

3. Choose the position that is most comfortable for you.

4. Put your index finger into your vagina and hook it through the NuvaRing®. Gently pull down and further to remove NuvaRing®.

If you are using the ring in a cyclic way, you will remove the ring after 3 complete weeks and wait 1 full week before you insert a new ring. You are likely to have your periods started within this ring-free week. You may still be bleeding when it is time to insert a new ring. This is normal. But the vaginal ring must be inserted on the same day of the week as it was inserted in the last cycle, or you could get pregnant.

Consider using an additional method of birth control contraception, like male condom, female condom or spermicide during ring-free week.

If you use NuvaRing® continuously, you can keep from getting your periods. Skip your ring-free week, and place a new ring every three weeks. It’s normal to have spotting or bleeding for the first six months.

Switching to NuvaRing®:

If you are switching to NuvaRing® from combined oral contraceptive pills (COCP), hormonal patch, progestin-only method (eg., mini-pill, implant or injection) or from a progestin-releasing intrauterine system (IUS), you can start NuvaRing® on the day you stopped any of aforementioned methods of contraception. However, do not start using NuvaRing® any later than the day you would apply your next patch, take next pill or make next injection.

In all of these cases use an additional method of birth control contraception, like male condom, female condom or spermicide for 7 days.

Using NuvaRing® after delivery:

Start using NuvaRing® no sooner than 4 weeks (28 days) after having a baby if you are not breastfeeding. You should use an additional method of birth control contraception, like male condom, female condom or spermicide for 7 days in addition to NuvaRing®.

If your period has not resumed after delivery, talk to your health care provider and make a pregnancy test to make sure you are not pregnant before you start NuvaRing®.

Do not use NuvaRing® if you are breastfeeding. Use other birth control methods (non-hormonal – like male condoms or spermicides) until you are no longer breastfeeding.

Missing a dose

Use NuvaRing® in a cyclic way - for 3 weeks (21 days) with the break of 1 week (7 days). Or you may also use NuvaRing® continuously – without a ring-free week.

Overdose

Use NuvaRing® exactly as directed. Do not use more than one NuvaRing® at a time.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F) and away from excess moisture and heat. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date. Keep out of the reach of children.
